Worlds’25: Sweden’s Jakob Söderqvist Takes U23 TT

Jakob Söderqvist etched his name in history after winning Sweden’s first-ever under-23 men’s individual time trial title at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships held in Kigali, Rwanda, on Monday, September 22, 2025.

The 22-year-old made a stunning display of speed and endurance, finishing over a minute ahead of his nearest rival, Nate Pringle from New Zealand, who secured the silver medal, and France’s Maxime Decomble, who claimed bronze.

Söderqvist, racing for Lidl-Trek Future Racing, completed the 31.2 km course with a time of 38:24.43, posting an average speed of 48.741 km/h. His remarkable performance left the field trailing behind, showcasing his dominance in time trial racing.

The victory marked a significant milestone in Söderqvist’s career, as it was a breakthrough win after finishing second in Zurich in 2024 and seventh in Stirling in 2023.

“This is the one thing in the U23 category that I care about the most, so it was preparations all year round to just make this one as good as possible,” Söderqvist said after the race.

A silver lining for Nate Pringle

New Zealand’s Nate Pringle delivered an impressive performance to claim the silver medal with a time of 39:28.39, just 1:03.96 behind Söderqvist. This was Pringle’s first World Championships, and he made an immediate impact, securing a spot on the podium.

Pringle has been on an upward trajectory in his career, already winning the New Zealand national under-23 time trial title in 2025. His strong performances in stage races, including a 7th-place finish in the general classification at the Sibiu Cycling Tour earlier this year, underscore his growing potential in the cycling world.

Maxime Decomble of France narrowly missed out on silver, finishing with a time of 39:28.56, just 0.17 seconds behind Pringle. Despite the close margin, Decomble’s third-place finish was a well-deserved result after a strong and consistent performance.

Decomble is no stranger to success, having won the French national under-23 time trial championship in 2024 and finishing second in the same event in 2025. His results in other stage races, including top finishes at the Tour de l’Avenir and Alpes Isère Tour, highlight his versatility and depth as a time trialist.

Also of note is Canadian Jonas Walton’s 6th place result – impressive stuff from the young Canuck. And yes – he’s related to former top pro Brian Walton – his dad.
